Bezmiâlem Vakif University Collection Exhibit Opened 10/26/2021

The official opening ceremony of the Bezmiâlem Vakif University Collection Exhibit area, which is an important outcome of the Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan Cultural Heritage Project carried out by our University General Secretary Dr. Zeynep Görmezoğlu and affiliated administrative units and supported by ISTKA, took place.

The opening ceremony of the collection area was attended by T.C. Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Ahmet Misbah Demircan, General Manager of Foundations Burhan Ersoy, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Ahmet Akça, Members of the Board of Trustees Bekir Hulusi Cansu, Fahrettin Özdemirci, Prof. Ahmet Gül, Our Rector and also the co-director of the project Prof. Rümeyza Kazancıoğlu, our General Secretary and also the project Executive Director Dr. Zeynep Görmezoğlu, our managers, academicians, administrative staff and students attended. After cutting the ribbon, Head of the Department of History of Medicine and Ethics as well as the academic advisor of the Project, Prof. Nuran Yıldırım, who contributed greatly to the realization of the collection exhibition area, shared information and anecdotes about the collection with the guests.
The "Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan Cultural Heritage" project, which is among the 89 projects accepted in the project applications made in the 2018 Istanbul Development Agency (ISTKA) Innovative and Creative Financial Support Program (YMP) branch, the "Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan Cultural Heritage" project and the administrative units affiliated to the general secretariat and the team consisting of expert academics successfully completed in 2020.
The project consists of the cultural heritage assets of the founder Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan that contribute to the memory of Istanbul; it was carried out by the General Secretariat of Bezmiâlem Vakıf University with the support of ISTKA in partnership with the Istanbul 1st Regional Directorate of Foundations, in order to create social awareness to protect, regulate, use and ensure that its values ​​are recognised and its continuity is passed on to future generations.
Along with the project team, our university's Construction Affairs Directorate, Library and Documentation Directorate, University Purchasing Directorate, Financial Affairs Directorate, Corporate Communications Directorate and Support Services Directorate units also supported our project.
 
One of the most important aims of the project; in order to pass on Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan, a benevolent woman who is to be a role model to society, to future generations and to raise awareness about her, about the Valide Sultan and the foundation works she has carried out; belonging to the time period of 1839-1928, found in archives, libraries and museums; long-term preservation (archiving, restoration and conservation) of written, printed, digital and visual cultural heritage, transferring it to digital media and providing easy online access. The outcomes of the successfully completed project serve domestic and foreign researchers, academics, historians and students who conduct research in other disciplines, especially in history and health sciences.
Priority areas of the project will increase added value and innovative work, and will serve cooperation, clustering and interdisciplinary activities; the development of sustainable platforms, business models and organizations that support knowledge dissemination, technology transfer and commercialization. The target audience of the project are academics, undergraduate, graduate, doctorate, Assoc. Prof.iate degree and Erasmus students, local and foreign researchers, the protection of printed and written cultural assets and historical heritage throughout the country, information-document management, archiving, librarianship, museology, public services related to Ottoman and Turkish history. and professional groups working in private institutions/organizations, people in the history, culture and education sector, and institutions and organizations with which we cooperate. The final beneficiaries of the project are the people of Istanbul, people from Turkey and abroad who are interested in the subject, all library and Internet users, authors, publishers, scientific and cultural circles, academics, researchers, higher education and primary and secondary school students and potential patients and their relatives have been.
Within the scope of the Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan Cultural Heritage Project, 23 main activities and 8 sub-activities were carried out. All activities carried out in the project were executed in accordance with the principles in the ISTKA Project Implementation Guide, ISTKA Purchasing Guide and ISTKA Visibility Procedures and Principles Guide, and the articles of the contract signed with ISTKA.
During the project, within the framework of the project activity plan, the preparation of the project office, technical specifications and procurement processes, research and collection of documents and materials, preparation of a digital project memory portal, digitization of printed resources and works and system integrations, cataloging, transcription and translation processes, establishment of an exhibition area for the collection, to the Ministry of Culture and main business activities such as obtaining an affiliated collector's certificate, conservation of artifacts, carrying out various cultural heritage activities and trainings, and publishing scientific publications on the subjects of the project were carried out.
59 original hospital registry books from the archives of the General Directorate of Foundations were transferred to our University within the scope of the project.
During the project period, a total of 5 exhibitions, 7 cultural events and 7 trainings were organized, both within the body of Bezmiâlem Vakıf University and at different institutions, on topics suitable for the purposes of the project, and 2 printed books were published. (Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan Charities and Bezmiâlem Vakıf University Collection Catalogue) Two interviews were published about the project in separate issues in the Bezmiâlem Current Magazine, which is published quarterly by Bezmiâlem Vakıf University and distributed to all relevant institutions. In accordance with contemporary museology standards, 3 Innovative Services/Models/Applications have been developed in the form of the Collection exhibition space, the project web portal and the digital archive. 4 digital exhibitions were set up in the exhibition area. In the exhibition area, 1 illuminated model of the historical building, which is the subject of the project, was built in 3D exact dimensions (reduced to scale). A project guide has been prepared in such a way that all the details of the project are explained and that those who want to learn about this field can benefit from it and are open to everyone's access on the web page.
Bezmiâlem Vakif University, which began operating in 2010 as a continuation of Gureba-yı Muslimin Hospital, has protected the historical movable cultural assets of Vakif Gureba Hospital in the entrance hall of the Rectorate building of the university. Within the scope of the "Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan Cultural Heritage Project", all the pieces in the collection were redesigned and exhibited with a contemporary museum approach.
After the opening ceremony of the collection exhibition area, 'Dr. Fatma Şakir Memik Amphitheater' was inaugurated. Dr. Fatma Şakir Memik graduated from Bezmialem Valide Sultan School, founded by our founder Bezmialem Valide Sultan. After completing her internal medicine residency at Vakıf Gureba Hospital, while working as the polyclinic chief at the same hospital, she was elected as Edirne’s member of parliament and served as an MP for three terms.
