Classifying research grants by Sustainable Development Goals

June 8th 3:00pm - 4:00pm BST

In this webinar, we will share the results of an analysis made during April and May 2021, in which we attempted to document the likely impact on the sustainability agenda from competitive research grants.

Grants awarded by Britain’s UKRI funder group over a 10 year period were analysed using Digital Science’s SDG classification technology to assess how many were associated with research in support of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Further, resulting publications from the same grants were analysed in the same way, to establish if and to what extent they addressed the same SDGs.

In addition to the results from the analysis carried out, we will also share results from the classification work itself, to demonstrate how the classification technology is able to capture sustainability related research terminology.

While classification of research articles by sustainable development goals is becoming more common, the purpose of the analysis was also to see how useful the application of the same technology would be to research grants; arguably the starting point for most public research today and a critical factor for scientifically supported sustainability developments.

Make a difference at scale: Big data query optimisation with Dimensions on BigQuery

June 9th 3:00pm - 4:00pm BST

Dimensions hosts an unprecedented collection of datasets on the Google BigQuery platform: 112 million publications with 1.3 billion citations, millions of grants, patents and datasets, 600,000 clinical trials, and more than 120 million Altmetric data points, all linked together to provide a comprehensive view of the research and innovation landscape.

BigQuery unlocks the full potential of the world’s largest research information database, but its scale also adds complexity that could otherwise be safely ignored: When querying billions of rows of data, even small performance improvements can mean big cost savings and dramatically faster loading times. In this webinar, we will review strategies for making your SQL queries more efficient, and for taking advantage of unique BigQuery features such as scheduled queries to make your projects run faster and cost less.

Informing Collection Development with the Dimensions API: an interview with Lauren Castle at UNSW

June 24th 1:00pm - 2:00pm AEST

Lauren Castle is a Collection Development Librarian at the University of New South Wales. Lauren’s team have been using the Dimensions API to provide additional insight into how the Library Collection is used and to inform collection development decisions.

In this interview and Q&A session, find out how Lauren uses Python and Google Sheets to access the Dimensions API to extract data on which journals researchers at our institution are publishing in and citing, as well as open access trends.
