Prof. Mehmet Z. Doymaz was the first scientist to join BILSAB, bringing unmatched expertise in clinical microbiology and molecular diagnostics. A cornerstone of the institute's foundation, he played a key role in shaping its research infrastructure. His work in pathogen detection and antimicrobial resistance has not only advanced diagnostics in Turkey but also positioned BILSAB on the international stage for infectious disease research.
Building on his foundational work, Prof. Doymaz has led numerous studies on viral and bacterial pathogens, with a particular focus on emerging and high-risk infectious diseases. His research on the nucleocapsid protein of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus (CCHFV) and related orthonairoviruses has provided critical insights into host immune responses and vaccine development. By combining molecular diagnostics with immunological studies, he has helped establish innovative approaches for rapid pathogen detection, serological surveillance, and comparative immunology across multiple species.
Beyond viral research, Prof. Doymaz has contributed extensively to understanding antimicrobial resistance, urinary tract infections, SARS-CoV-2 immunity, and tuberculosis epidemiology in Turkey. His integrative approach, combining clinical microbiology, molecular techniques, and epidemiological analysis, has strengthened public health initiatives and informed strategies for disease control. Through these efforts, he continues to advance both national and global infectious disease research, mentoring the next generation of scientists and shaping BILSAB's role as a hub for cutting-edge microbiology.
