POEM (Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy) method that is practiced for deglutition disorders and achalasia treatment is successfully implemented at the Bezmialem Vakif University’s Gastroenterology Clinic. With the treatment that was successfully implemented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Orhan Kocaman, our university obtained the privilege to be the first center in Istanbul and second in Turkey applying this procedure. With the POEM method, an endoscopic treatment is being implemented against the complaints of swallowing difficulties, weight loss and chest pain that are caused by muscular diseases in the alimentary canal and dysfunctions in the area of alimentary canal and stomach transition region.
With the POEM method practiced by only a handful of centers in the world, the whole treatment can be implemented through endoscopy. Average duration of the procedure is around 1 to 2 hours and patient scan be discharged from the hospital the day after the procedure, or even on the same day of the procedure.
