Live Operation at Bezmialem Broadcasted in United States 10/7/2016
An operation performed by the Head of Cardiology Department, Prof. Dr. Ömer Götekin to a blood vessel was watched live from the US. Unblocking blocked vessels of a 65-year-old patient on both arms, Göktekin explained the operation live to his colleagues in the US.  Turkish cardiologists also watched the live broadcast online.
Connecting live to the meeting on unblocking of heart vessels and stenting, held in Florida, US, Prof. Dr. Ömer Göktekin said, ‘We discussed each stage of this operation with panelists in the US. It was a very educational operation and gained a lot of attention. Today, we have intervened with this blocked heart vessel. Unblocking of other vessels is usually harder and the success rate is lower. In this procedure, we unblock a blocked vessel and success rate is around 90%. We have almost the same conditions with the best laboratory in the world.

Stating that they place stents by unblocking completely blocked vessels on both arms of patients, Prof. Dr.  Dr. Göktekin said, ‘When angiography is performed on a cardiac patient, there is a 30% chance of finding the completely blocked vessel. One in 3 cardiac patients has fully blocked vessels. They may have been blocked years ago or as a result of heart attacks. Sometimes they may get silently blocked; the patient might not notice them and are discovered angiography. There are special techniques for unblocking such vessels. We are using different wires than those ones used for unblocking other vessels. We perform this procedure with the help of balloons. We keep our patients for one day at the hospital after the operation. We plan on discharging our patients the next.’
