‘Hand in hand for an Accessible World’ activity was organized within the scope of ‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities’ at our university. Our University’s General Secretary Zeynep Gökçen, Assistant Head of our Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department at Faculty of Health Sciences, Associate Prof. Dr. Semiramis Özyılmaz, European champion in athletics and shot put and the Responsible of Bağcılar Municipality Disabled Sports Club Hamza Doğan, sportsmen who are connected to Bağcılar Municipality Disabled Sports club including first runner up in Athletics and wheel chair run and European champion Hamide Kurt, European Champion and 5th in 2016 Rio Paralympic Games in Athletics wheelchair run, Zübeyde Süpürgeci; 3rd in European Athletics Nurşat Usta, Winner of Eurasia Marathon Ömer Cantay, the trainer of 1st League Wheelchair Basketball Champion Team and Team Captain Emrah Elban, sportsmen from Istanbul Altı Nokta Association of Visually Impaired including 1st Goalball Turkey Champions Ünal Açıkgöz, Recep Selvi, Ergin Arslan, Şule Yazıcı, Rabia Aydın, General Chairman of Association of Visually Impaired Ahmet Cantürk and Club Chairman Cengizhan Carlak, our executives, faculty members, health personnel and students attended the activity that took place at our Vatan Campus.
The event started with the magnificent show of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Disabled Directorate’s Janissary Band. General Director of Association of Visually Impaired, Ahmet Cantürk gave a speech at the event and said, ‘The main problems of the disabled can be resolved with improvements in education, employment, rehabilitation, health and social security.’ Our national athlete Hamza Doğan said, ‘First, we need to offer possibilities to the disabled and then, the success comes along. Our disabled citizens then come over their disabilities both physically and mentally and make our country proud.’
After the sketch, which aimed to make us think while making us laugh, the students of our Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department gave a presentation titled ‘Exercise in Orthopedically Disabled Individuals.’ After the dance of our disabled students, the event ended with presentation of awards to our sportsmen who ranked in the competition by the General Secretary of our University, Zeynep Gökçen.
