The Scientific Committee Module Program of Our Medical Faculty Completes Its First Phase 10/2/2024

The first phase of the Scientific Committee Program for the 2024-2025 academic year has been completed, featuring presentations by faculty from our university and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, followed by student presentations.

The Scientific Committee Module Programs, organized between Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Bezmiâlem Vakıf University, offer our students opportunities to engage in scientific research, significantly contributing to their academic and professional development. The first module of the program organized by the Medical Faculty's Scientific Committee took place on September 30, 2024, for fourth-year students, and on October 1, 2024, for fifth-year students. The program commenced with opening remarks from our Rector, Prof. Dr. Rümeyza Kazancıoğlu, and the Committee Chair, Prof. Dr. Pınar Soysal.

During the two-day event, Rector Prof. Dr. Rümeyza Kazancıoğlu stated, "Our collaboration with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is in its 11th year. When we started the Scientific Committee Program, Johns Hopkins had already been running this program for five years, so it was also new for them. Together, we have worked to learn and improve this program. I believe we have entered a new phase in the Scientific Committee Program. The use of artificial intelligence will help you think differently when asking questions and seeking answers. Moreover, question everything you read, regardless of which scientific journal it is published in. In the era of artificial intelligence, there are no sounds, images, or writings that cannot be replicated. Data should not be used without verification."

In the first module, topics covered included "Research Education in the World?" by Prof. Dr. Semra Özçelik, Chair of the Department of Medical Education and Communication, "Overview of Scholarly Concentrations – Projects and Methodologies" by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Steve Sozio from the Division of Nephrology, "Finding the Research Question" by Prof. Dr. Som Saha, and "Making the Most of Mentors" by Prof. Dr. Kelly Gebo from the Division of Infectious Diseases. Additionally, Özlem Yalçınkaya, Director of our Library and Documentation, spoke on "Searching the Medical Literature," and Dr. Onur Emre Onat from our faculty discussed "Health Informatics."

In the second module, Dr. Onur Emre Onat again addressed "Health Informatics," while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özge Pasin, Chair of the Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics, presented on "From Data to Results (Processing and Displaying Data)." Prof. Dr. Mary Catherine Beach from Johns Hopkins discussed "Abstract Writing: Background and Methods" as well as "Abstract Writing: Results and Discussion."

Following the theoretical lectures, students presented their scientific studies to the members of the Scientific Committee and faculty from Johns Hopkins University.
