International Palliative Care and Hospice Congress Organized 3/11/2018

Our university organized the "International Participatory Palliative Care and Hospice Congress" for multidisciplinary medical insights that provide care and support to people and families suffering from untreatable diseases.

Our Rector Prof. Dr. Rümeyza Kazancıoğlu, Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Dilek Sema Arıcı, Faculty of Health Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Ahmet Belce, General Surgeon Lecturer and the Manager of our Faculty of Medicine Hospitals' Palliative Care Center Prof. Dr. Adem Akçakaya, many local and foreign academicians and doctors, nurses and health professionals attended the congress.

Under the leadership of the university, with the support of the Physicians' Rights Association,  Prof. Dr. Rümeyza Kazancıoğlu who carried out the opening speech at the internationally participated congress which lasted 3 days, where palliative care and hospice structuring in Turkey, nutrition in palliative care units, palliative care, pain and symptom management, phytotherapy in palliative care, pediatric palliative care, death, current topics such as age were discussed, stated ; "As you all know, we can define palliative care as a process covering the physiological, psychological, social and spiritual requirements of the patient and his / her relatives".

Palliative care is only provided when the treatment process has been completed or treatment has failed. In one place, we can say for patients who are desperate. For this reason, compassion and a loving hand as well as medical help is of great benefit to the patient. It is of utmost importance that this humanitarian service, which changes according to the cultural and social structure of the patient, is given by competent, human-oriented, healthy communicators and specialists who care about spiritual values. Our institution, which grows day by day, runs the Palliative Care Center in order to help these patients who are in a difficult situation and need care.

"As followers of Bezmialem Valide Sultan , we should not forget that our primary duty is to help people who are sick and make efforts to restore them to their health. We also pay special attention to the patients who need palliative care, work to receive their blessings. I want you to know how happy and pleased we are to have you in the same attitude and thoughts. While finishing off my speech I would like to remind once again how great the duty of physicians and healthcare personnel is in palliative care, which is the foreground of the human side. I thank you all individually for your participation."

General Surgeon Lecturer and the Manager of our Faculty of Medicine Hospitals' Palliative Care Center Prof. Dr. Adem Akçakaya informed at the congress, "In our country, palliative care has been intensely popular recently and our institutions have begun to form. But unfortunately we have a shortage of hospice. It also comes from the fact that we are escorted to the last minute of the hospital, which is caused by our culture. But besides this, the aggrieved waif patients who suffer in familial terms, need the construction of this hospice. Also, regarding terminally ill patients, it was necessary for us to be able to discuss what the concept of death was philosophically. For this purpose we organized the congress and got together with the best physicians in the world."

At the same time, Prof. Dr. Adem Akçakaya emphasized that people should not be prejudiced about such care centers and that terminally ill patients should also receive professional support. "There are some problems that the patient has experienced and their relatives do not know how to eliminate it. Their solution comes by a well trained and efficient team. Empathy, self-sacrifice, patience and volunteerism are needed for the last periods of our patients. We need to know how to look after the aggrieved, terminally ill patients and know how to relieve their pain. We intend to send them to their homes after we have done this in the hospital environment. Therefore, I hope that the understanding of the foundation which is in our culture will be developed in the field of hospice with the progress made in the palliative field with a movement consisting of volunteers.
