General Information

A physiotherapist is a professional member of the therapy team who is able to assess the physical, mental and psycho-social needs of a patient leading to solutions which aim to increase the quality of life. He personally performs the required assessments of the patient who has been diagnosed and referred to him by the specialist physician, plans and executes indicated therapeutical procedures within his professional responsabilities. Moreover, his responsabilities include the planning and execution of preventive and developmental health programs by performing related measurements and assessments of healthy individuals and regulating their physical activities.

Physiotherapists are expected to fulfill many important roles in health care, consequently their education must include comprehensive courses in basic and clinical sciences as well as extensive theoretical, practical and applied professional training aiming to impart required competences for physiotherapy practice. Our curriculum has been designed to comply fully with these requirements and is inspired by the educational institutions of leading countries with the aim of providing a modern, multidimensional and comprehensive program. Admission is through competition in the national inter-university selection and placement examination; program duration is five years including one year of preparatory courses.

Most physioterapists are active in internal medicine branches such as neurology, cardiology, pulmonary diseases, physiatry and rheumatology as well as in orthopedical, traumatological, hand, cardiopulmonary, arterial  and neurosurgery. In addition, they provide their services  for obstetrics and urogynecological conditions, sports injuries, reanimation, home care and public health. Currently, the role of physiotherapists is gaining in importance and the application areas of their competences are constantly expanding.

Physiotherapists may practice their profession in many different institutions such as: public and private hospitals, polyclinics, public health centers, sports clubs, health and training centers, normal and disability schools, remedial and special training centers, geriatric care homes and nurseries, municipalities, home care centers, associations and foundations for specific diseases.

Physiotherapy is a scientific discipline which has national and international recognition with its own specialty and autonomy (Health Sciences Primary Area Condition no:101; Scientific Area code: 1024). Our graduates may be appointed to academic positions by furthering their education to attain Master’s and doctoral post-graduate degrees.
