Prof. Mohammad Asif Khan is a computational biologist and bioinformatics expert whose work bridges biology, data science, and translational research. He is a former visiting faculty member at our institute and has been instrumental in establishing our Big Data Lab facility. He completed all his higher education at the National University of Singapore, earning a Bachelor of Science (1999–2003), a Master of Science (2003–2005), and a PhD (2006–2010). During his doctoral studies, he developed deep expertise in integrating large-scale biological data with computational methods, laying the foundation for a research career focused on solving complex biological and biomedical problems.
His research applies data-driven analytics, molecular modeling, and machine learning to better understand pathogen biology, immune system interactions, venom function, vaccine development, drug design, and disease biomarkers. Over the years, he has developed several novel bioinformatics methodologies, tools, and specialized databases, and currently holds three granted patents. He has published more than 75 journal and conference articles, book chapters, and books, and presented over 58 posters at national and international scientific platforms. Notably, Dr. Khan is the founding scientist of the dedicated Data Science Center and high-performance computational server in Turkiye, established at Bezmialem University through a leadership grant awarded to him—an initiative that provides unprecedented infrastructure for biological and biomedical data science research nationally.
Beyond research, Dr. Khan is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists and delivering high-quality bioinformatics and data science education to undergraduate and postgraduate students. He actively contributes to the scientific community as a reviewer for journals, conferences, and funding agencies, and has played key roles in organizing numerous local and international bioinformatics conferences, meetings, and workshops.
