Mustafa Aziz Hatiboglu
Dr. Mustafa Aziz Hatiboglu, is currently Professor and Chair in the Department of Neurosurgery at Bezmialem Vakif University Medical School in İstanbul. He completed his medical school in 2001 at the Ankara University School of Medicine. He had his neurosurgical training from the, İstanbul Okmeydani Training and Research Hospital, Turkey. Dr. Hatiboglu further studied clinical and basic science research on glioma and brain metastasis as a post-doctoral research fellow between 2007 and 2010 in the department of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX. He also worked as a clinical fellow on Neurosurgical Oncology for one year at MD Anderson between 2010 and 2011. During this period, he received Journal of Neuro-Oncology Award in 2008 and National Brain Tumor Society Mahaley Clinical Research Award in 2010. Dr. Hatiboglu started his academic carrier in Türkiye as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Bezmialem Vakif University in 2014 and is currently working as Professor in the same department. He also established his “Brain tumor research lab" at BILSAB. His clinical and research interest is in central nervous system malignancies particularly gliomas and brain metastasis. He, as a clinician and a researcher, can establish a bridge between clinical problems and address this problem with basic science and translational research. His research area includes chemo- and radio-resistance mechanisms in brain cancers particularly in glioma cancer stem cells; optimizing radiation dosing schedule and combinational treatments; nanoparticle use in diagnosis and treatment; mRNA vaccination in glioblastoma; liquid biopsy; brain cancer microbiome and metabolomics.
Research Area: Glioma and brain metastasis, Identification of biomarkers in brain tumors, Liquid biopsy, brain cancer microbiome and metabolomics, Therapeutics, Nanoparticles Based Drug/Vaccine delivery against glioblastoma,
Field of expertise
Neurosurgery, Neuro-oncology, Translational research
Scientific Impact
Brain cancers - glioblastoma in particular - are very challenging to treat, and there has been no complete cure and no first-hand diagnosis of this fatal brain disease. One of the key areas that we, as a group, are emphasizing is to look for suitable biomarkers for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes by exploring and uncovering molecular and genetic uniqueness via multi-omics studies. Another aspect of our research is to follow a more patient-centered and translational approach that can help us devise new strategies in diagnosing and treating glioblastoma.
Ongoing work
Our team is working on multiple aspects of glioblastoma and brain metastasis diagnostics and therapeutics. Some of our priority areas are the identification of prognostic markers through liquid biopsy, the role of gut microbiota and metabolomic properties in glioblastoma, and the use of nanoparticles in the delivery of vaccines and drugs across the blood-brain barrier. Also, we perform multi-omics studies including clinical / radiological data, transcriptomics, and metabolomics to better understand biology and behavior of brain tumors.
About the team
Currently, the Brain Tumor Research Laboratory/Molecular Biology Laboratory has one post-doctoral fellow, one PhD Scholar, one Master Student and one intern.
Dr. Mohd Haseeb, Postdoc
Dr. Mohd Haseeb completed his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Biotechnology from Integral University, Lucknow India. He obtained his PhD in nano-biotechnology from National College (Autonomous), Bharathidasan University, Tamilnadu, India in 2020. He has served as an assistant professor of biochemistry and Immunology between 2011-2016 and from 2020-2023 at various academic institutions and universities across northern India. His area of specialization includes nanoparticle synthesis, the development of nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems against cancer, and multi-drug-resistant microbes. He is currently working on developing novel fluorescent carbon dots as theragnostic agents against glioblastoma and developing new diagnostic approaches against glial tumors.
